Juho Viitasalo on Product Design: The revolution will be 3D printed
February 18th (Fri)
3D printing used to be something that was only used for making
prototypes before manufacturing the final product – hence its old name
“rapid prototyping”. Recently 3D printing has become affordable and
accessible to designers. The variety of available materials has also
grown to cover several plastics and even metals. Juho will show how 3D
printing can be used in all steps of the design process and also as a
sales channel. A designer no longer needs to ask for someone’s
permission or have a big budget for realizing new ideas. Juho will
also talk about his past projects including iPhone related designs and
work at NASA.
Juho Viitasalo is a Finnish industrial designer in Japan. His recent
consumer products include mobile phone accessories which are sold by
many of the major electronics chains in Japan and abroad. In the past
he has also worked with aerospace, furniture, interior and branding
related projects. Besides product design he also works with
Nordic-Japanese technology transfer and product localization. Juho is
one of the few non-Japanese members of the Japan Industrial Designers’
Association.
