Travel Rules to Japan

On March 1, 2022, Japan opened its borders to foreign nationals who are entering the nation for business purposes. However, all foreign nationals who wish to enter Japan need to apply for a visa.

Prior to getting your visa from your embassy, you will need a certificate for completion of Registration to the ERFS system (Entrants, Returnees Follow-up System). The Registration to the ERFS system can be done online.

The Registration to the ERFS system is obtained by a receiving organization, such as companies or organizations which employ or invite the entrants for their business or entertainment purposes.

Unfortunately, Design Matters is not able to offer the ERFS certificate. This means that if you’re planning to join Design Matters Tokyo 22, you need to find a Japanese partner/company that can grant you the ERFS certificate.

However, the entry rules are constantly changing. If Japan visa requirements change before the event, we will update and share the information accordingly.

You can read more about the visa application here:

As for quarantine rules, the presence or absence of quarantine periods for entrants to Japan depends on a list of “designated countries/regions” as well as the possession of a valid vaccine certification.
